Quick answer

Key fobs take a beating: dropped on concrete, sat on, soaked in pockets, chewed by dogs. The good news is that most fob problems are in the parts that wear out — the rubber buttons, the plastic case, the battery contacts — and those can be renewed without replacing the whole unit.

We refurbish fobs at your location: new case, new buttons, cleaned contacts, fresh battery, tested against your car. When a fob genuinely can't be saved — typically water damage to the circuit board — we'll tell you straight and make you a replacement instead.

Repair or replace: how we decide

The rule of thumb is simple: if the electronics are healthy, repair. Worn-through buttons, a cracked or split case, loose battery contacts and tired micro-switches are all refurbishable — we transfer your working circuit board into a new case with new buttons, and the fob comes back feeling factory-fresh. Replacement is the honest answer when the circuit board itself is damaged, which is most common after water or washing-machine damage, or when the fob works intermittently with no pattern (a sign of board-level faults). We check the board under magnification before advising, so the decision is based on what we can see, not guesswork.

What a fob refurbishment involves

A refurb starts with opening the fob and inspecting the board for corrosion, cracked solder joints and damaged components. We clean the contacts, repair what's repairable, then move the board into a new case with fresh buttons and a new battery. Every button is tested at the car — lock, unlock, boot release — and if it's a proximity key, we test keyless entry and push-button start too. The whole job is done in the van at your location, and your original fob keeps its original programming, so there's no recoding needed. If the board fails inspection, we stop and talk replacement before spending any of your money on parts that won't fix it.

Key Fob Repair — questions we get asked

Can a broken car key fob be repaired?

Often, yes. Worn buttons, cracked cases and loose battery contacts are all repairable — we refurbish the fob with a new case and buttons. Circuit-board damage, usually from water, is the main thing that makes a fob unrepairable.

My key fob got wet. Can it be saved?

Sometimes, if we get to it quickly. Remove the battery straight away to stop corrosion and don't try to use it. We'll inspect the board under magnification — light corrosion can be cleaned, but heavy water damage usually means a replacement fob.

Only one button on my fob works. Do I need a new fob?

Probably not. Single-button failure is almost always a worn micro-switch or a worn button pad — classic refurbishment work. We can renew the buttons without replacing the fob's electronics.

How long does a key fob repair take?

A standard refurbishment — new case, buttons, battery and testing — takes around 20 to 30 minutes at your location. If the board needs closer inspection or a replacement fob has to be programmed, we'll tell you the timeframe on the phone.

Is it cheaper to repair a fob than replace it?

Almost always. Refurbishing your existing fob costs less than supplying and programming a new one, and it keeps your original programming. We'll only recommend a replacement when the board is beyond repair.
