Locksmith vs Dealer for a Replacement Car Key: Cost and Time Compared
Dealer or locksmith for a replacement car key? For most cars, a mobile locksmith is cheaper, faster, and comes to you — the dealer usually needs the car towed to them. Here's the honest comparison. Call 07425 435697 for a quote.
The short answer
For the vast majority of cars, use a locksmith. We're cheaper, we're faster, and we come to the car — the dealer needs you to get the car to them, which usually means paying for a tow on top. The exceptions are a small number of very new models with manufacturer-locked security, where even we'd tell you to go to the dealer.
Cost compared
- Locksmith: one price covering the key, cutting, programming and the call-out. Quoted on the phone before we travel.
- Dealer: the key itself, plus programming labour, plus — if you've lost all keys — the tow to get the car there. Each billed separately, and it adds up.
Dealers aren't trying to rip you off; their cost structure is just built around workshop jobs, not roadside ones. But pound for pound, the locksmith wins on most cars.
Time compared
- Locksmith: same day, usually within hours. We come to you and finish in one visit.
- Dealer: often days — order the key, book the workshop slot, arrange the tow. If you need the car this week, that's a problem.
When the dealer is the right call
We'll be straight about this, because some locksmiths won't be:
- Very new models with manufacturer-locked key security. If yours is one, we'll tell you on the phone — we'd rather lose the job than waste your day.
- Warranty situations where the manufacturer insists on dealer work. Rare for keys, but check if it matters to you.
For everything else — lost keys, spares, programming, broken keys — a proper auto locksmith does the same job, at your location, for less.
Questions to ask whoever you call
- "What's the total price, including everything?" (Not "from" — total.)
- "Do I need to get the car to you?" (If yes, add the tow cost.)
- "How soon can it be done?"
- "What do I need to prove the car is mine?" (If they don't ask, worry.)
The bottom line
Get a quote from both if you like — it costs nothing to ask. But for most drivers, most cars, most of the time: the locksmith is cheaper, faster, and comes to you. That's not a sales pitch; it's just how the maths works.
