Don't force it. Really.

A key that won't turn in the ignition is asking for patience, not muscle. Forcing it snaps the key in the barrel — and then you've got a broken-key extraction and an ignition repair instead of just the repair. If the key won't turn, stop, wiggle the steering wheel gently (a locked steering column is the most common cause), and if it still won't budge, call us.

Why ignition barrels fail

  • Worn barrel. Years of keys in and out wear the internal wafers. Eventually they stop reading the key properly.
  • Heavy keyrings. A kilo of keys, fobs and bottle openers hanging off the ignition wears the barrel prematurely. Ask any locksmith — we'll all tell you to lighten the keyring.
  • Attempted theft damage. If someone's had a go at your ignition, the barrel may be damaged even if they failed. We see this after break-in attempts.

What happens when you call

  1. Call us — and don't force the key.

Describe what's happening: won't turn, turns but won't start, feels loose.

  2. We come to you and diagnose the barrel.

At the car, properly — not a guess over the phone.

  3. We repair or replace it.

Where possible we repair; when the barrel's done, we replace it and cut keys to suit.

  4. We test start multiple times.

Because an ignition that works "sometimes" isn't fixed.

What it costs

  • Barrel type and make — some are simpler than others.
  • Whether new keys are needed — a fresh barrel usually means fresh keys cut to match.
  • Time and location — as always, quoted upfront.

We'll tell you on the phone whether it's likely a repair or a replacement, and the price for each. No surprises.

Ignition questions, answered

My key won't turn at all. Is the barrel dead?

Not necessarily — first check the steering lock isn't engaged (wiggle the wheel while turning the key). If that doesn't free it, the barrel is likely worn or damaged, and that's our job.

Can you repair it, or does it need replacing?

Depends on the wear. We'll always try repair first where it's sensible — but we'll be honest if the barrel's past saving. Either way, you get the price before we start.

Will I need new keys?

If we replace the barrel, yes — new keys cut to match, programmed where the car needs it. If we repair the existing barrel, your current keys usually carry on working.

The key turns but the car won't start. Same thing?

Not always — that can be the immobiliser not recognising the key rather than the barrel. We'll diagnose it properly on the spot instead of guessing.
