It's rarely the whole lock

When a door lock misbehaves, most people's first thought is an expensive full replacement. In our experience it's usually one of three smaller things: the barrel (the bit the key goes in), the linkage (the rods connecting it), or the actuator (the motor that does the locking). We diagnose which one it is and fix that — not the whole assembly.

What goes wrong

  • Worn door lock barrel. Years of use, dirt and weather wear the internals. The key gets stiff, then stops working.
  • Attempted break-in damage. A screwdriver in the lock leaves tell-tale damage. We see this regularly — we repair the barrel and make the door secure again.
  • Worn key damaging the lock. A badly worn key doesn't just struggle — it chews up the lock as it goes. Sometimes the key is the problem, not the lock.

Describe the symptom on the phone — stiff, spinning, dead, or damaged — and we'll have a good idea what we're dealing with before we arrive.

What happens when you call

  1. Tell us the car and the symptom.

Which door, what's it doing, and how long it's been like it.

  2. We come to you and diagnose it.

Barrel, linkage or actuator — we find the actual fault.

  3. We repair or replace the faulty part.

Not the whole lock unless it genuinely needs it.

  4. We test with your key.

Lock, unlock, central locking — all working before you pay.

What it costs

  • Which part failed — a barrel repair and an actuator replacement are different jobs.
  • Make and model — parts vary.
  • One door or multiple — if one's gone, the others may not be far behind. We'll check and tell you honestly.

Diagnosed on the spot, priced before we start work.

Door lock questions, answered

The key spins in the lock but nothing happens. What's that?

Usually a failed linkage or a barrel that's broken internally — the key turns, but it's not connected to anything any more. Repairable in most cases.

Someone tried to break into my car. Can you fix the lock?

Yes — attempted break-ins typically damage the barrel, which we can repair or replace. We'll also check the door's security while we're there. If you haven't already, report it to the police and get a crime reference number for your insurer.

The central locking works but the key doesn't. Which is broken?

Probably the barrel or the key itself — the electrics are fine if the central locking works. We'll test the key first; sometimes a fresh key cut is all it needs.

Can you make all the locks work off one key?

If a previous repair left you with mismatched locks, we can usually re-key them to a single key. Ask us on the phone and we'll tell you if it's possible on your car.
