Quick answer
We'll be straight with you: changing a car key battery is usually a two-minute job you can do yourself with a small coin battery from any supermarket. If your fob has a visible seam or a little sliding cover, you probably don't need a locksmith at all.
But batteries aren't always the problem. If a fresh battery hasn't brought the fob back to life, or your fob is sealed with no obvious way in, that's a different job — possibly a worn-out fob, a damaged circuit board, or a fob that's lost its pairing with the car. That's what we're here for, anywhere in Birmingham, day or night.
Signs your fob battery is dying
A dying battery gives you fair warning. The classic sign is reduced range — you have to stand closer and closer to the car for the remote to work. You may need to press buttons twice, or the keyless entry stops responding while the emergency blade still works fine. Some cars show a 'key battery low' warning on the dashboard, and push-button-start models may only start when you hold the fob right against the start button. These are all battery symptoms. If the fob works perfectly sometimes and not at all other times, or one button works while another doesn't, suspect the fob itself rather than the battery.
When to call us instead of doing it yourself
Call us when the fob is sealed or glued with no service opening — forcing those open usually cracks the case or damages the board. Call us when a new battery hasn't fixed anything: that points to a failing fob, a board fault, or a fob that needs reprogramming to the car, all of which we diagnose at the roadside. And call us if the fob is physically damaged — cracked case, worn-through buttons, water damage — because we can refurbish the fob with a new case and buttons or supply a replacement and program it. We always check the simple things first; we won't sell you a new fob when all you needed was a battery.
Car Key Battery Replacement — questions we get asked
How do I change the battery in my car key?
Most fobs split open with a coin in the seam or have a small sliding battery cover. Note the battery number (usually a CR2032), swap in a fresh one the same way up, and click the fob shut. Test all the buttons before you walk away from the car.
Where can I get a car key battery replaced in Birmingham?
You can buy the battery at any supermarket or hardware shop and fit it yourself in minutes. If you'd rather have someone do it — or the fob is sealed — call us on 07425 435697 and we'll sort it at your location.
How do I know if it's the battery or the fob that's faulty?
Battery faults are gradual: shrinking range, needing multiple presses, dashboard warnings. A faulty fob tends to be erratic — works fine one minute, dead the next — or has physical damage. If a fresh battery changes nothing, the fob itself is the suspect.
My key fob stopped working suddenly. Is it the battery?
Batteries usually fade rather than die instantly, so a sudden failure is worth checking more carefully — try the spare key first. If the spare works, the problem is the fob (battery, board or pairing). If neither works, it may be the car, not the keys.
Will changing the battery wipe my fob's programming?
Not normally — the pairing is stored on the car's side as well as the fob, and a quick battery swap doesn't lose it. If the fob doesn't work after a battery change, it's more likely a board fault or a desynchronised fob, both of which we can diagnose.
