Quick answer

The immobiliser is the electronic gatekeeper between your key and your engine: if it doesn't recognise the key, the car won't start, no matter how healthy the battery and starter are. When that handshake fails, you get the classic symptoms — engine cranks but won't fire, a flashing key or padlock symbol on the dash, or a 'key not recognised' message.

We diagnose immobiliser faults at your location: testing your keys, reading the car's fault codes, and working out whether the problem is the key, the immobiliser unit, or the wiring in between. Where the fix is key-related — a failed transponder chip, a desynchronised fob, a lost key that needs coding — we do it there and then. Where it isn't, we'll tell you plainly and point you at the right specialist.

How we diagnose an immobiliser fault

Diagnosis starts with the simplest test: trying your spare key. If the spare starts the car, the fault is in the first key — a dead or damaged transponder chip, or a fob that's lost its pairing — and we recode or replace that key. If neither key works, we read the vehicle's fault codes through the OBD port and check what the immobiliser is reporting: antenna or coil faults around the ignition, corrupted key memory, or communication failures between modules. Many faults are key-side and fixable roadside — coding a new key to the immobiliser, or erasing and re-adding keys to clear a corrupted memory. If the codes point to a failed immobiliser control unit or damaged wiring, that's beyond mobile locksmith work and we'll say so, usually recommending an auto-electrician or the dealer.

Key-to-immobiliser coding, explained

Every modern key contains a transponder chip with a unique code, and the car's immobiliser holds a list of codes it's allowed to start the engine. Coding is the process of teaching the car to recognise a new key's code — done through the OBD port with specialist programming equipment. It's the same process whether we're adding a spare key, replacing a lost one, or erasing a stolen key from the car's memory so it can never start the vehicle again. Most cars accept new keys this way in minutes. A small number of very new models have manufacturer-locked security that only the dealer can access — if that's your car, we'll tell you on the phone before we travel, not after we've arrived.

Car Immobiliser Services — questions we get asked

What are the symptoms of an immobiliser fault?

The engine cranks but won't start, a key or padlock warning light flashes on the dashboard, or the car displays 'key not recognised'. The central locking may still work fine — the immobiliser only blocks the engine from starting.

Can a locksmith fix an immobiliser problem?

If the problem is key-related — a failed chip, a desynchronised fob, lost keys needing coding — yes, we fix it at the roadside. If it's a failed immobiliser unit or wiring fault, that's auto-electrician or dealer work, and we'll tell you which it is after diagnosis.

My car won't start but the battery is fine. Is it the immobiliser?

Try your spare key first — if the spare starts it, your main key's chip has likely failed. If neither key works and the engine cranks normally, an immobiliser or related electrical fault is a strong possibility. We can diagnose which at your location.

Can you code a new key to my car's immobiliser?

Yes, for most makes and models — we program the new key's transponder chip to the car via the OBD port, and we can erase lost or stolen keys from the system at the same time. A small number of very new models are manufacturer-locked to dealers; we'll check yours when you call.

Will you fit a Ghost immobiliser or aftermarket security?

No — we don't supply or fit aftermarket security systems. What we do is diagnose immobiliser faults, code keys to your car's existing immobiliser, and give honest advice. If your situation needs specialist security work, we'll point you in the right direction.
