Quick answer
Yes — in most cases, a properly equipped auto locksmith can program a chipped (transponder) key. The chip in the key holds a unique code; programming teaches your car's immobiliser to recognise it, done through the OBD port with specialist equipment. The exceptions are a small number of very new models with manufacturer-locked security that only dealers can access — we'll check yours on the phone and tell you honestly before anyone travels.
What the chip actually does
Every modern car key contains a tiny transponder chip — no battery needed for this part — with a unique code. When you turn the key or press start, the car's antenna reads the chip, and the immobiliser checks the code against its list of authorised keys. Match: the engine starts. No match: it cranks but won't fire. The chip is invisible and passive, which is why a copied blade alone won't start a modern car.
How OBD programming works
We connect programming equipment to the car's OBD port and, with the right security access for that manufacturer, add the new key's chip code to the immobiliser's authorised list. We can also erase lost or stolen keys from that list at the same time — so a stolen key can never start the car again. For most makes and models the whole process takes minutes.
Remote and smart keys too
It's not just basic transponder keys. Remote fobs (lock/unlock buttons) and proximity smart keys (keyless entry, push-button start) all get programmed the same way — the equipment handles the remote functions and the immobiliser chip together. One visit, one programmed key, everything tested at the car.
The honest exceptions
A small number of very new models use manufacturer-locked security — encrypted key systems where only the dealer network holds the access. If your car is one of them, no mobile locksmith can program a key for it, and anyone who says otherwise is guessing. We'll check your make, model and year when you call and tell you straight: us, or the dealer. We'd rather lose the job than waste your evening.
What about keys bought online?
Sometimes we can program them, sometimes we can't — cheap online keys often use poor-quality chips that won't take programming, or the wrong chip for the car. If you're thinking of buying a blank online to save money, call us first and we'll tell you whether it's viable for your model before you spend anything.
Related questions
Will programming erase my other keys?
Only if we choose to. We can add a key alongside your existing ones, or erase lost/stolen keys from the car's memory — for example after a theft. We'll ask which you want.
Does the car need to be present for programming?
Yes — programming happens through the car's OBD port, so the vehicle must be there. That's exactly why we're a mobile service.
How long does key programming take?
Usually 15 to 30 minutes once we're at the car, depending on the make and model. Cutting the blade (if needed) is a separate step on top.
