BMW keys, in plain language
BMW has used four generations of keys, and which one you've got decides what's involved:
- Traditional blade keys (older models). A metal key, sometimes with a basic transponder chip. Straightforward to cut and program.
- Flip keys. The blade folds into the fob. Common across the 2000s and early 2010s range.
- Smart fobs with Comfort Access. Keyless entry and start — the fob never leaves your pocket. This is what most BMWs on Birmingham's roads use today, from the 1 Series to the X5.
- Display Keys (newer models). A fob with a touchscreen. Clever, expensive, and the one most likely to make you wince at the quote.
We work on all four, including the 1 Series, 3 Series, X3 and X5 we see most often. When you call, tell us which type you've got — or just the model and year and we'll know.
The honest bit about newer BMWs
Here's what some locksmiths won't tell you: BMW keeps tightening key security. Older models store key data in a module we can talk to directly at the roadside. From around the mid-2010s onwards (the F-series cars), BMW moved to more locked-down systems, and the newest models tighter still.
What that means in practice:
- Most BMWs we can do at your location — home, work, or wherever the car's sitting.
- A small number of the newest models lock key programming behind systems that need dealer-level access. If yours is one of them, we'll tell you on the phone — before we've sent a van, not after we've arrived and scratched our heads.
We'd rather lose a job honestly than waste your evening. Tell us the model and year and you'll get a straight yes or no.
All keys lost on a BMW?
Yes — in most cases we can still help, and no, you don't need to tow it to a dealer. We generate a new key from the car's own security system, at the car. It takes longer than copying from a spare and it costs more, but it's one visit and it's done. If you've still got one working key, get a spare cut now — it's far cheaper than another all-keys-lost job later.
What happens when you call

"3 Series, 2018" is enough to start. We'll ask what happened and what key type you've got.
- Get an honest answer.

You test everything — locks, ignition or start button, boot — before you pay.
What it costs
A BMW key isn't one product with one price. A blade key for an older 3 Series and a Display Key for a new X5 are different jobs with different parts. What moves the price:
- Key type — blade, flip, smart fob or Display Key.
- Model and year — newer security systems mean more involved work.
- Spare vs. all keys lost — generating from scratch costs more than copying.
You get the exact figure on the phone before we set off, and that's what you pay. If anyone quotes you a BMW key job without asking the model and year, they're guessing — hang up and call someone who isn't.
What you'll need ready
- Photo ID — driving licence or passport.
- Proof the car is yours — usually the V5C logbook, or purchase paperwork plus ID.
- The car itself — we work where it sits.
